About This Place

(Or: Why You’re Here, Why I’m Here, and Why We’re All Probably a Little Unhinged)

Hi. I’m Rudy Martinez—a 53-year-old Chicano from LA currently living in Paris. A night owl who writes in the quiet after everyone’s gone to bed, and a guy who’s spent way too much time explaining to both Mexicans and white people why I don’t fit neatly into either box. (Spoiler: I don’t. And the older I get the more I am okay with it.)

This Substack is my corner of the internet where I dump:

  • The essays I write at 2 AM, fueled by coffee, nostalgia, and the occasional existential dread.

  • The weird history I obsess over—Mexica mythology, the hidden corners of Paris, the stories no one else seems to care about.

  • The fiction that lives rent-free in my head, demanding to be written down.

  • The children’s books I’m slowly chipping away at, because apparently, I have a soft spot for weird little stories.

  • The podcasts I record in a closet, surrounded by pillows and the muffled sounds of Parisian traffic, because sometimes the best acoustics are the ones you create yourself.

Why Subscribe?

Because you’re one of those people who:

  • Has a bookshelf full of books they’ll never finish.

  • Knows random facts about things you think no one else cares about and yet you can’t shut up about it.

  • Feels a little too much joy from late-night walks when everyone else is asleep.

  • Might, just maybe, be a fellow unhinged creative who thrives in the margins.

I don’t do clickbait, SEO nonsense, or pandering. I do real talk, weird history, and the occasional rant about how the world forgot to teach us the cool parts of our stories. If that sounds like your kind of chaos, stick around. If not, no hard feelings—just don’t blame me when you find yourself hooked.

Welcome to the circus. Grab a snack. The show’s about to start.
