The Firelight Glows Again
The fire crackled in the hearth, and Lupita snuggled closer to Abuelo. “Tell us another story,” she whispered. “The one about how we came to be.”
Abuelo smiled. “Ah, mijita, the story of bone and maize. Tonight, I’ll tell you how the gods made us; how they gave us the gift of life from the earth itself.”
Mateo, hugging his toy jaguar, looked up. “From the earth? Like dirt?”
Abuelo chuckled. “No, mijito, from something even more precious - maize (Mah-EES), the sacred corn. But first, the gods had to journey to the darkest place of all...”
